Scanning the bleachers at the Northeastern High School gym Tuesday for an audience volunteer, one of the Harlem Wizards basketball players scooped up a 9-year-old boy from his seat and trotted toward center court.
After having some fun with the crowd, "Swoop" Dwayne Simpson lifted the boy -- Mount Wolf Elementary third-grader William Gerber -- until he was almost level with the basket, and William finally got the dunk after several tries.
For that, the boy got a Harlem Wizards basketball and baseball cap.
The Harlem Wizards basketball team -- comprised of former Division I college basketball and professional players with nicknames like "Air Jamaica" and "Superjam" -- visited
The event was a fundraiser for Orendorf Elementary's Parent Teacher Organization.
The game really was more of a show, and people appeared to enjoy it, laughing and cheering at the players' antics and jokes.
During the game, the Wizards often jogged along as if not working all that hard but still blowing right by the Bobcat faculty.
"It's fun," said Wendy "Nothinbuthairnet" Garman, a lunch aide at Mount Wolf Elementary who wore an orange hairnet and her nickname on her jersey.
"They're good with their tricks," she said of the Wizards' skills with the ball, adding "they're great guys."
One of the taller Bobcats, physical education teacher Rusty McCollum, said he played college basketball for St. Andrew's. He, too, appreciated the Wizards' skill and athleticism, and how they found a use for it after finishing college.
"It's fantastic that they find a way to do what they love and to entertain," McCollum said of the Wizards' players.
Orendorf Principal Todd Monos said assembling a team was easy and having Wizards players visit the school Tuesday generated a great deal of enthusiasm
"We knew it would be a hit," Monos said.
