One season after Lauren Laubach won the award, Katie Fonte was selected as the York Daily Record/Sunday News girls' lacrosse player of the year with South Western's Katie Wherley in the YAIAA.
Fonte, a junior, took some time for a question-and-answer session. Here's what she had to say:
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
I always put on chapstick. I'm a big chapstick fan. Other than that, I just get out there and play.
How did you get started playing lacrosse?
The first time I played was when I was 7 or 8, actually. My dad played lacrosse in college, so he definitely trained me to be a lacrosse player right off the bat.
What do you love most about lacrosse?
My favorite part of lacrosse is the team. Getting to know people and playing on the team, that is my favorite part. I also love playing attack, it's my favorite position. And I love scoring.
Do you have any pets? What are their names?
Yeah I have a dog, and we have some goats and chickens. Our dog's name is Abby, and she's a yellow lab.
What is your biggest junk food addiction?
I would say chocolate ice cream. Definitely the best thing in the world. But I have to limit myself in what I eat, and I try to stay in the best condition that I can.
Do you play any other sports?
I play field hockey in the fall, but I also play fall-ball lacrosse and indoor lacrosse. Basically I never stop playing lacrosse. Even if I'm not playing something, I am out running and trying to keep in the best shape.
What do you like to do in the offseason?
I love doing outdoor activities. I love to hike, camp, fish, swim; anything outdoors. I am outside all the time. I don't know a video game, and I am probably on the computer for about five minutes a day. I like to keep life simple.
Name one place you'd love to go during your lifetime?
I'd really like to go to Alaska. It's somewhere different, and not everyone likes Alaska. I think it is beautiful there, and there is great fishing over there. I'd really like to check it out.
You're going to be a senior in 2011-2012. Any ideas about college?
I definitely want to play in college. I'd love to play D-II, or D-III maybe. I'm thinking about looking at Shepherd or St. Mary's. I know I want to major in something to do with science, but other than that, I have no idea.
School just ended. What is your favorite thing to do in the summer?
Just hanging out with my friends and being outside. Just having time to relax, and play lacrosse, of course.
What is better: finding a teammate for a nice goal or scoring a big goal?
I feel better when I am assisting someone, actually. I feel like I helped that person get a goal, and it's all about teamwork. It's not about your personal success. It's about helping everyone else on the team.
What is your jersey number, and why do you wear it?
At the moment it is 17. Actually my favorite number is 12. But I think I will just stick (17) with it for next year.
Who would you say is your hero?
Definitely I'd have to say my mom. She is the kindest person in the world. She teaches me to be the best person I can be, and to never hold anything back and take as many risks as I can. She works a lot, but she is at every game that she can, and she is there cheering me on even if it's not the greatest (game). She's always there to cheer me up, and talk things out.
What do you think makes Kennard-Dale lacrosse so successful?
It's a great program with a great coach. He (Kelly Wetzel) definitely helps us gain skill. And our team gets along really well on and off the field. If there is a goal open, we're going to take it. But if there is a pass to be made, and another person is open, we're going to pass it because we just want to work as a team and be the best we can be. Also having such good friends on the team really helps us connect on the field.
What was your biggest thrill of this season?
I'm just going to have to say bonding with my teammates. We have so much good times. We connect on the field and off the field, and it's definitely a big part of our success.
Talk to me about the rivalry Kennard-Dale has developed with South Western?
Before the South Western game, that was the most serious warmup I've ever seen in my life. I don't know, we just wanted to win so bad, and we were so glad that we got revenge.
Do you have a favorite restaurant you like to go to?
I really love Olive Garden. I love Italian, and it's really good food. I don't eat at restaurants much. The only time I go out is for special occasions, but I'd much rather have a home-cooked meal.
