The First Capitol Detachment of the Marine Corps League will honor Sgt. John Henry Denig, who received the Medal of Honor for his service during the Civil War, 7 p.m. Thursday at Prospect Hill Cemetery.

Denig, born in York in 1838, earned his medal at the Battle of Mobile Bay, a defining naval battle of the war, when he worked a gun aboard the USS Brooklyn.

Members of the public wishing to attend the ceremony honoring Denig should park at the cemetery's main office, and follow signs to his grave.

Prospect Hill Cemetery serves as the final resting place for more than 1,000 Civil War soldiers. A second Medal of Honor recipient, Charles Henry Ilgenfritz, is also buried on cemetery grounds.
