Happy Restaurant Week York, everyone!

Before heading to your favorite local York restaurant, read these helpful tips on wine etiquette and the perfect wine and food pairings.

When dining out, the evening's host/hostess (i.e. the person responsible for the bill) would select the wine. The host/hostess, as a courtesy, might pass the wine list around the table for suggestions and allow their guest(s) to select the first bottle.

Smart host/hostess tip: Arrive early to the restaurant, before your guests, and discuss the menu, wine choices and pricing with professional staff.

For the beginner

If you are a beginner and not sure what you would like or what pairs with your entrée enlist the help of the wine steward or sommelier. Most fine dining establishments have these experts on hand to assist you.

It is customary to tip the sommelier 15-20 percent of the total cost of wine bottle. This is a separate gratuity from your meal.
