The Dallastown Area School Board appointed Steven Bentzel, 54, of Jacobus, to the board Thursday night. Bentzel will fill the vacant seat left in October by Margaret Ibex, who resigned for health reasons.
Bentzel, a father of two, has been attending board meetings for about three years as a parent. His 22-year-old daughter Rachel is a college senior, and his son Aaron, 18, is a junior in the district. Aaron Bentzel earned a national Legion of Valor Bronze Star for Achievement Award, one of only 6 in the nation, as a senior in the ROTC.
"I'm coming to all the meetings, I figured I'd give it a shot and here I am," said Bentzel.
Bentzel said he likes to look into issues before making decisions and he expects being a board member to be challenging.
"I see this as a team effort. The students come first, but you can't ignore the concerns of the community," he said.
Bentzel is also very involved in the community, teaching Sunday school at his church and volunteering with the Boy Scouts.
"All the kids I have had at the church and in scouts, my interest doesn't stop with my son and daughter graduating," Bentzel said. Bentzel will represent Region III in the district.
"He has a history of service to the community and we look forward to working with Mr. Bentzel," said board President Kenneth "Butch" Potter.
