OLIVIA BORTNER, a sophomore in the Spring Grove Area School District, was appointed a Junior Council Person by Mayor Grace Angotti and the New Salem Borough Council. Bortner's term began in September and will continue until June. She will be active in monthly council meetings, while gaining an understanding of community government.

ASHLY JONES, daughter of Lauren and Ken Jones, received the Shiloh PTO and Ronald R. Young Scholarship. The scholarship is presented to a West York Area High School graduate who attended Charles B. Wallace or Norman A. Trimmer Elementary School, exhibited academic excellence and volunteered. Ashly plans to attend West Chester University to study early-childhood and special education.

RACHEL LAUGHMAN, an illustration major at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design, achieved the dean's list for the spring semester. She is the daughter of John and Debbie Laughman of Spring Grove.

DAVID JUBA, a junior public administration major at Shippensburg University, is recipient of a Shippensburg University Foundation Scholarship and the Joan Hilkert Memorial Scholarship. JEREMY SEITZ-BROWN, a 10th-grade student at Spring Grove Area Senior High School, received a Gold Key award for his writing entry in the short story category through the 2012 South Central Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program. This nationally recognized program awards students for their creative excellence in 28 different categories ranging from poetry to journalism and painting to comic art. Students in seventh through 12th grades were eligible to showcase their talents and have their entries judged by area artistic and literary professionals. Award winners who received Gold Keys will have their work advanced to the national level.

CADET ERIC NICHOLAS BUSH of Spring Grove, a criminal justice major at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, was named to the dean's list for the fall semester.

CARINA BOTTERBUSCH of Dover, a senior at Bridgewater College in Virginia, completed 134 hours of internship at Manito Academy in York. This internship completes the required field experience course in social work to earn a major in sociology with minors in social work and psychology when she graduates in May. Botterbusch plans to attend graduate school in the fall.

SKYLER ARMSTRONG, a first-year graphic design major at Rochester Institute of Technology, was named to the dean's list for the first quarter. She is a 2011 graduate of Spring Grove Area Senior High School and the daughter of Lisa and Henry Wivell Jr. of Spring Grove.

GARRETT BOLLINGER of Spring Grove, achieved the dean's list for the fall semester at Northeastern University, College of Social Sciences and Humanities in Boston.

TYLER CRONE of Dover, a secondary education mathematics major at Lock Haven University, performed in the Lock Haven University Percussion Ensemble Dec. 7 in the Sloan Fine Arts Building.

ANDREW ZMOLEK, a junior chemical engineering major at the University of Pittsburgh, and a researcher in the LittleLab at Pitt, was recently awarded the Chancellor's Undergraduate Research Fellowship for the spring semester. Zmolek was chosen as a fellow for his promise as a researcher, and is the first Pitt engineering student to receive this recognition. His fellowship research proposal outlined his objectives and methodology as he studies "electrostatic interactions between peptides and controlled drug delivery vehicles." Andrew is a 2009 graduate of West York Area High School.

TYLER MCGINNIS, a junior at Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., is studying in Japan this semester. McGinnis is participating in Earlham's Studies in Cross-Cultural Education program. Students live and study in Morioka and have a field placement in local schools where they participate in and observe educational processes central to Japanese society. He is the son of Lynne and Timothy McGinnis of Dover.

ANDREW ZMOLEK of West York, a junior chemical engineering major at the University of Pittsburgh, was awarded the Edward B. Stuart and Geraldine J. Stuart Memorial Scholarship of $1,500 for the fall semester. This award recognizes "academic promise, integrity, creativity and eagerness" in the field of chemical engineering and was awarded by the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Department and the Dean of the School of Engineering.

WES JACKSON of Spring Grove, a sophomore at Gettysburg College, participated in the 2011 fall production, "Blood Wedding."

BRITTANY NICOLE SMALL, daughter of David and Roxanne Small, was chosen as a state finalist in the National American Miss Pennsylvania Pageant to be held Aug. 7 and 8 at Hilton Towers in Harrisburg. Brittany will be participating in the 16- to 18-year-old division. Brittany is in the honor program at Dover Area High School, a varsity cheerleader and on the varsity track-and-field team. She also helps with Special Olympics and serves as an ambassador with People to People.

MICHAEL ROBERTS, a 2007 graduate of Spring Grove Area High School and son of Marc and Kim Roberts, graduated with bachelor of science degrees in mechanical engineering and mathematics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received MIT's Wunch Foundation Silent Hoist and Crane Award for academic excellence and was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa. Through research to improve manufacturing techniques for silicon electronic components, Roberts also received the Rabinowicz Award for outstanding undergraduate research in tribology, the study of surface friction lubrication and wear. He will be employed by Intel Corporation in Portland, Ore.

SHANELLE MARKS of Dover has received the Student Association Distinguished Service Award at Western New England College. Marks is a senior graduating with a degree in industrial engineering. Western New England honored the winners of the 2011 Cocurricular Awards at a ceremony April 30. The Student Association Distinguished Service Award is given to a student who has shown a high level of creativity in design and delivery of program services and who has demonstrated outstanding loyalty and commitment toward the enhancement of student life.

SARA TAYLOR graduated magna cum laude May 18 from Lycoming College, Williamsport, with a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics. A member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honor Society, Taylor received the 2011 Charles J. Kocian Award for the Greatest Proficiency in Applied Mathematics, the 2011 J.W. Feree Award for the Most Active in Mathematical Sciences and the 2011 W. F. Sadler Prize for the Highest Achievement in Mathematics. She is the daughter of Steve and Barb Taylor of Spring Grove.

CHRISTY BRUNNER graduated with honors from East Stroudsburg University with a bachelor's degree in health and physical education. She is the daughter of Bob and Tanya Brunner of Spring Grove and a graduate of Spring Grove Area Senior High School.

PEYTON GODFREY has received a Deans' Award scholarship to attend Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) in Columbus, Ohio, and major in Fine Arts. The merit scholarship was awarded as a result of an art portfolio competition held at the College and judged by a team of CCAD faculty members. She is the daughter of Robin and Monji Godfrey of Spring Grove and a senior at Spring Grove Area Senior High School.

His research was titled Photon Detection by Simulated Rod Photoreceptor Cells by Photo-Multiplier Tube (PMT). MICHELLE M. BRADLEY, a Dover Area High School student, has been recognized for academic achievement by being selected for membership into The National Society of High School Scholars.

MEGAN MECKLEY of Dover, a senior Susquehanna University graphic design student, was awarded two silver awards for her pieces in entitled MCI Skymiles Direct Mail and Turning Points Invitation, presented at the Greater Frederick Advertising Federation Student ADDY Awards held in February. The annual ADDYs competition recognizes creative excellence in advertising by both students and professionals. In April, Meckley was awarded two silver awards in the magazine category and a sliver and merit award in the website category in the "Real Show" competition sponsored by the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington. These awards were presented at the American Eye Design Center in Washington, D.C.

EDDIE CERVANTES, an international business major in the Robert E. Cook Honors College at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, participated in the 2011 Alternative Spring Break program. For his alternative spring break trip, he traveled to Texas, where he worked at an animal rescue sanctuary near San Antonio, which IUP students have done for the past five years. He is a 2009 graduate of Dover Area High School and the son of Jose Cervantes and Cristina Huertas. He is a recipient of a Board of Governors Scholarship and a Cook Honors College Scholarship. He is involved in the Student Government Association, University Senate and the Alpha Phi Omega national service fraternity at IUP.

Ambrosius previously graduated from York College with a bachelor's degree in political science, and earned a master's degree in public policy from Johns Hopkins University. He is the son of Jeannette Ambrosius of Dover and David Ambrosius Jr. of Spring Grove, and lives in Charleston, W.Va., with his wife, Gabrielle, 4-year-old son Knighton and 9-month-old daughter Julianna.

ALIANNA LANDRY, daughter of Kevin and Cyndie Grove and student at Dover Area High School, was accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum. She will join a select group of students in Washington D.C. in July to explore some of the nation's most prominent monuments and institutions.

BRAYDEN MOTTER, son of Chris and Jennifer Motter, and a student at Dover Area High School, was accepted into the People to People World Leadership Forum. He will join a select group of students in Washington, D.C., July 9 to 16 to study leadership and explore some of the United States' most prominent monuments and institutions.

KATIE J. FERGUSON of Dover was named to the dean's list with highest honors at McDaniel College in Westminster, Md. for the fall semester.

JACQULINE R. TOME, DMD, daughter of Janice Perks Tome of North Codorus Township and Greg Tome of Springettsbury Township, is pursuing a general-practice residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital. She graduated in May from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, earning a doctorate of dental medicine and a master of bioethics degree. Dr. Tome received the Pierre Fauchard Academy Scholarship for academic achievement and community service, and ran an oral health screening program called Jeff Hope at a homeless shelter managed by Thomas Jefferson University medical students. Tome is a 2001 graduate of Spring Grove Area Senior High School, and graduated in 2005 from Albright College with bachelor's degrees in biology and Spanish.

JAMES E. LOCKE, a sophomore business administration/music business program/communications major at Albright College in Reading, was selected to be part of the Housing and Residential Learning staff for the 2010-11 academic year, employed as resident assistant. He is a graduate of West York Area High School.

EMILY ABEL, a junior business administration major at Lycoming College, has been inducted into Delta Mu Delta, an honor society for business and accounting students. She is the daughter of Kimberly Abel and Todd Abel and a graduate of Spring Grove Area High School.

JESSICA ARRUDA, a junior communications major with an emphasis in public relations at Susquehanna University, was named a University Scholar at a recent scholars dinner held in September. To be named a University Scholar, students must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.75 in full-time study for the past two semesters or equivalent credit hours of part-time study. Arruda is the daughter of Deb and Gary Arruda and a 2008 graduate of Dover Area High School.

RYAN RAFFERTY, a freshman biology major at York College, received a Dean's Academic Scholarship to attend York College. Rafferty is a graduate of West York Area High School.

ROBERT UTLEY, a freshman history major at York College, received a Presidential Academic Scholarship to attend York College. Utley is a West York Area High School graduate.

JACKIE WAGAMAN graduated from Tulane University in December with a master's degree in social work and a gerontology certificate. She is the daughter of Edward and Cathleen Wagaman of West Manchester Township and works at East Jefferson Medical Center in Metairie, La.

SARA LANDIS, a junior at Dover Area High School, was granted a full scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week 2010 on the campus of Lycoming College in Williamsport. Free Enterprise week is a weeklong economic education program that offers students an inside look at the private enterprise system and the way the free market functions. Sara is the daughter of Luke and Sandra Landis of the Dover area.

JOSHUA C. FIRESTONE, a Dover Area High School junior, was selected to attend West Point's Summer Leaders Seminar. SLS attendees live in the cadet barracks, eat in the cadet mess and participate in academic, leadership, athletic and military workshops. They also participate in virtual-reality war simulation and physical fitness training.
