I have been the life skills support teacher at Susquehannock for 15 years, and I was very happy and moved to have read the article Oct. 25 about Chance Smith being a part of the William Penn High School's homecoming court. Chance's recognition is one that most students do not get to experience - let alone a student in the type of program that Chance (and my students) are in.

This article sheds a positive light on all the students and staff at William Penn. Kudos to everyone involved in being a positive part of this young man's life. It's clear that Chance's personality, energy and love for life is infectious. The message of Chance being on his school's homecoming court is one of acceptance, empathy and love for a fellow student. I hope Chance enjoyed his homecoming experience as much as he seems to enjoy every day. Most of us can't even begin to imagine the odds that Chance and his family have been forced to deal with over his lifetime. This memory, this moment, is one that I'm sure brings much delight and satisfaction to all that are fortunate enough to know Chance and his family.

In closing, thanks to the Sunday News for giving this story the front-page coverage it deserves.
