sparking too many positive initiatives to list fully here. Thank goodness he was recently honored at Martin Library for his community involvement. Too often we wait until after someone has died to say publicly and with fanfare how much their work has meant to us. Characteristically humble, Judge Cassimatis averred he was unworthy of such honors. At the risk of being overruled from on high, we object to such self-effacement, your honor. Judge Cassimatis' death is a great loss to our community.
ROSES: To all the real citizens who took the time to vote Tuesday. Turnout was pathetic overall, but those who do take the time to vote in municipal elections are the heroes of democracy.
THORNS: To those who couldn't be bothered to vote Tuesday.
ROSES: To the poll workers who put in long hours with few "customers" on election day.
ROSES: Last election rose, we promise, to Tom Kearney who was elected the new district attorney. Not that there was any suspense: He had no challenger. But he's already getting started planning for his new job. We wish him well.
THORNS: To the York County District Attorney for allowing Bryan J. Fraim, 32, of Glenville, into the Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition program. He allegedly ran over
ROSES: To York County Drug Task Force for providing $40,000 for a student survey about drug use. The survey, conducted every two years, asks students in sixth, eighth, 10th and 12th grades their attitudes about illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, teen pregnancy, sexual activity and violence. Money usually used for the survey was cut from the state budget.
ROSES: To Sam Brenner, 5, son of York Mayor John Brenner, for his bravery and for serving as an example. He recently got his flu shots in front of cameras and reporters. "I didn't even feel it," he said after the shot. You probably won't either -- especially if you get the nasal mist. But you'll definitely feel the flu if you come down with it. Get that vaccine.
ROSES: To the Rotary Club of York for offering veterans some help landing jobs. Call Stacy Kyle at 763-0968 for more information.
ROSES: To the Olde Towne East neighborhood of York: A. For its recent improvements through the Elm Street state grant program. B. For the documentary about the efforts, "The Renaissance of Olde Town East," shown Wednesday at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center. It's smart marketing for the neighborhood to promote its improvements.
ROSES: to volunteers with the Witch Watch patrols in Dallastown and Red Lion on Halloween. Folks were out in neighborhoods to make it a safe night for the kids.
ROSES: To Tucker Ferguson of Newberry Township for being named the new executive of PennDOT's District 8, which includes York and Adams counties. Here's hoping he can get a lot of much-needed repairs and improvements done on local roads.
