MATTHEW T. AGUILAR has been awarded an Air Force ROTC scholarship to attend a host college or university. Upon graduating from college and completing the ROTC program, the cadets are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Air Force. He is a 2012 graduate of Red Lion Area Senior High School and the son of Scott Aguilar of Stewartstown.

RHODA MARSTELLER, a student athlete at Binghamton University in New York, was named to the spring athletic director's honor roll. She is on the softball team and pursuing a degree at Harpur College of Arts and Sciences. She is from Fawn Township and attended Kennard-Dale High School.

KATIE HERTZ, daughter of Dan and Pam Hertz of Codorus Township, graduated as a Doctor of Optometry with highest honors from Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University in May. She is a graduate of York College with a bachelor's degree in biology and minor in chemistry. Hertz is an optometry resident at the Baltimore VA Medical Center in Maryland, where she will complete a residency with an emphasis on ocular disease.

ZACHARY BARCIKOWSKI, a junior applied physics major at Lock Haven University, gave a poster presentation at the 2012 March meeting of the American Physical Society held in Boston Feb. 27 to March 2. He presented his research titled "Mechanical deformations of the metal cathodes of polymer light-emitting devices during stability tests." Barcikowski was awarded a summer internship at the Argonne National Laboratory to work on atomic layer deposition for thin film lithium ion batteries. He is the son of Sherry and Carl Barcikowski of Stewartstown.

MEGAN MYERS, a freshman pre-pharmacy major at Wilkes University, spent her spring break volunteering in Kentucky as part of the Wilkes University Alternative Spring Break program. She is the daughter of Carol and Dale Myers of Codorus Township.

This nationally-recognized program awards students for their creative excellence in 28 different categories ranging from poetry to journalism and painting to comic art. Students in seventh- through 12th-grades were eligible to showcase their talents and have their entries judged by area artistic and literary professionals. Award winners who received Gold Keys will have their work advanced to the national level.

ZACHARY BARCIKOWSKI, son of Carl and Sherry Barcikowski of Stewartstown and a sophomore applied physics major at Lock Haven University, presented a poster presentation on his research titled "Pt Nanostructures Self Assembled on P doped Si (100) Under Ambient Conditions: AFM ad EDX Study" at the American Physical Society March meeting in Dallas. His research focuses on research of chemistry and physics of self assembly of the platinum nanostructure on the Si clean surface.

She is also vice president of Students Advocating Gender Equality and is a co-director of the "Vagina Monologues."

KATRINA SHUGHRUE, a senior chemistry major at Juniata College, is one of 74 undergraduate students nationwide to have her research poster displayed in the exhibit "Posters on the Hill" April 13 in the Rayburn Office Building in Washington, D.C. She is the daughter of Phil and Julie Shughrue of New Freedom and a 2007 graduate of Susquehannock High School.

Shughrue's research poster was chosen from more than 700 applications nationwide. Her research, which was funded by a grant from the II-VI Foundation, is titled "The Analysis of 'Conflict Minerals' using Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy: the Example of Columbite-Tantalite." Her work focuses on using LIBS to analyze columbite and tantalite, two minerals important in the consumer electronics industry that are found in abundance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BRIDGET TOMS of Stewartstown, a junior dance major at Mercyhurst College in Erie, performed in the premiere of a new concert, "Movers & Shakers," by SoMar Dance Works, a company-in-residence at Mercyhurst.

SARAH FARACE of Codorus Township, a university studies major at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., completed the new cadet training week in September with the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets and is now a part of the university's longest-standing tradition of leadership development.

JESSE SCHLALINE of Stewartstown, a senior marketing major and member of Phi Kappa Psi at Lycoming College in Williamsport, has been inducted into Lycoming's Upsilon Omega chapter of the Order of Omega, a Greek Leadership Honor Society.

EMILY ANZMANN of New Freedom is currently studying abroad through the Boston University International Programs office. A senior health science major at Boston University's Sargent College, Anzmann is enrolled in the Dublin Internship Program through the end of the fall 2010 semester.

SHANNON YOUNG of Felton and a graduate of Red Lion Area Senior High School, is enrolled as a freshman at the University of Evansville in Indiana.

ERIK WHITELAW, a student from South Eastern Middle School East in the South Eastern School District, was recently honored at the statewide award ceremony for gifted children held by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. Erik and other award recipients were invited to this awards ceremony sponsored by CTY based on an exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to second- through eighth-grade Talent Search participants. Seventh and eighth-graders took the SAT or ACT - the same tests used for college admissions. Second through sixth-graders took the SCAT, an above-level test scaled for younger students.

ELIZABETH WAGNER, an incoming freshman at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, has received the 2010-11 Schock Scholarship, awarded to deserving students who reside in specific counties and who will be attending certain Pennsylvania institutions by the Clarence Schock Foundation in Mount Joy. She is a graduate of Susquehannock High School and the daughter of Alan Wagner of Glen Rock.
