Picture Elvis, bright lights and gambling in the form of flora and fauna and you've got the 2012 Shrewsbury Flower Show, Viva Las Vegas!

The event, open to the public 1 to 5 p.m. Aug. 25 and 26 at the Shrewsbury Fire Hall, will feature more than 150 entrants in design categories and garden specimen exhibits.

Both amateurs and professionals compete in such categories as Lady Luck, The Big Spender, Viva Elvis and The Wedding Chapel.

A garden photo contest also is part of this year's event.

I've attended the Shrewsbury Flower Show several times, and have always been impressed with the contestants' creativity and attention to detail.

While a team of accredited flower show judges does nearly all the evaluation, visitors do get to name their favorite through a People's Choice Award.

For details, call Sharon Hartenstein at 717-235-1130 or Sherrill Trimpey at 717-235-2715.

The Shrewsbury Flower Show was founded in 1949 by former Shrewsbury native and flower enthusiast Mary Carman in conjunction with the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Shrewsbury Fire Company.
