ERIE, Pa.—Muskrats got all kind of love in a corny 1970s hit by the Captain & Tennille. But meerkats are getting all the love at the Erie Zoo these days.

The Erie Times-News ( http://bit.ly/HuypL0) says a female that gave birth to two meerkats in January has now given birth to three more, on Monday.

Zoo president and chief executive Scott Mitchell says the births took zoo officials by surprise. He says it's difficult to tell when meerkats are pregnant with babies, saying "They just have them."

Meerkats can have several litters a year and their gestation period is only 11 weeks.

The small mammals are in the mongoose family and are native to certain deserts in southern Africa.
