EASTON, Pa.—A Pennsylvania man accused of trying to kill his elderly wife has been acquitted by a jury.

William Kimmel was found not guilty Friday of attempted homicide and assault charges.

Police alleged the 65-year-old man had brutally beaten his 70-year-old wife, Sandra Kimmel, in November 2010. She suffered a broken neck, wrist and eye socket.

Defense attorneys said there's no evidence their client assaulted his wife, saying instead she fell down the stairs after mixing wine and the anti-anxiety medication Xanax.

Authorities say Sandra Kimmel called 911 after waking up bloody in her bed. But during testimony she was unable to recount exactly how she was hurt, saying she remembers little after climbing the stairs inside their Northampton County home.
